Disappearing Reef

I exhibited this series, “Disappearing Reef”, in July 2023 at the Art House, Wyong, Australia.

I remember the first time I visited The Great Barrier Reef in the late 1980s... the sensory overload of colour, shape and movement. It was awe-inspiring and it was Australian.

As a printmaker who has lived near the coast most of my life, the sea has shaped and inspired my creative practice. In Disappearing Reef, I seek to draw attention to the significant human impact on the Great Barrier Reef. The use of serene thalo blue invokes the once pristine reef drawing our attention to the spectre of coral bleaching and all of the ensuing consequences for the reef as an ecosystem. We must act to mitigate climate change.

“We are at a unique stage in our history. Never before have we had such an awareness of what we are doing to the planet, and never before have we had the power to do something about that. Surely we all have a responsibility to care for our Blue Planet. The future of humanity and indeed, all life on earth, now depends on us.” - David Attenborough
